Difference Between Advice and Suggestion

Advice: I advise you to eat more vegetables.

Suggestion: I suggest we go out for dinner tonight.

Advice

Advice is a recommendation that you give to someone who isn’t in a position to make the decision. For example, if your friend asks for advice about where he should go on vacation, and you tell him about an amazing beach resort that you know of and think would be perfect for him, then you are giving advice.

The person receiving the advice does not have to agree with it or even take it into consideration at all; they’re simply hearing what another person thinks would be best in this situation. You could also offer up suggestions on how they could solve their problem without necessarily telling them what they should do (e.g., “I think calling customer service might help!”).

Suggestion

The word “suggestion” means a proposal, an offer or plan to do something. It’s something you do when someone asks for your opinion, but it’s not as strong as advice and doesn’t necessarily have to be followed.
