Baptism vs Dedication

Baptism

The priest/deacon will ask you if you want to be baptized; if so, he will lead them through the ceremony (or “rite”) of baptism in which they are cleansed from sin by water and receive new life through Christ’s gift of grace.

The first time we hear about Jesus’ ministry was at his baptism by John in the Jordan River (Matthew 3:13-17). This was also an example set forth by St Peter who said “Repent therefore and be converted” when he saw many people being baptized (Acts 2:38).

Dedication

Dedication is a ceremony to formally dedicate an individual or an object to the service of God. In most cases, dedications are held on special occasions, such as birthdays and anniversaries.

The term “dedicate” comes from the Latin word “dicare,” which means “to consecrate.” In other words: if you want to dedicate something (or someone), it means that they are set apart for some special purpose–and this is usually done through prayerful consideration and careful planning.

On the other hand, dedication is more of a personal experience where parents affirm their commitment before God when they bring their child into this world
